HSUS Kills Chicken Business in California

Stop HSUS With The Truth. Got 50?

Dear Editor,

I’d like to thank Tom Miller for his Advance Yeoman Ag Update 3/4/09, discussing California’s Prop 2. Scientific studies show that it would cost well over $500 million (a conservative estimate) to convert to PRE-Prop 2 standards for organic or cage-free standards – which would be a suicidal business move to satisfy the 5% of consumers who buy cage-free eggs.

But wait – it gets worse. A literal interpretation of the language of Prop 2 requires each chicken to have 5.4 square feet of space,  which means that even existing California “cage-free” and organic egg-producing systems will be illegal. A scientific Promar study concluded that (on top of farm retrofitting costs), compliance with Prop 2 would increase costs to produce each egg by OVER  76%. Prop 2 was never intended to give chickens “ a little more freedom.” It was designed to destroy farmers.

In case anyone had any doubt about the true agenda of HSUS, stop and think about this. California already had stacks and stacks of cage-free eggs in every major grocery store chain in the state – sitting there waiting for anyone willing to pay more for them.

The deceptively-named “Humane” Society of the United States (HSUS) has declared that they plan to take this Prop 2  “victory” to states nationwide.

But I know a way to stop them. We can do it together.  It’s called, “Got 50?”

The HSUS strategy is simple and frighteningly effective: incrementally divide and conquer. They started with ballot measures outlawing hog gestation crates in Florida and Arizona. There were very few hog farmers to fight back in these states, so the HSUS emotional, deceptive ad campaigns were a slam-dunk. Like shooting fish in a barrel, as my dad would say.

Once HSUS had the so-called “anti-cruelty” Arizona and Florida laws under their belt, they lined California up in their sights – and proceeded to destroy the future of the “California egg industry”.  This “industry” is comprised of about 30 farms/companies – nearly all family-owned. One that I know of is a 7-generation family farm, passed down with love and care to each succeeding generation – until HSUS wiped out their future.

By the way, my dad is a hog farmer – so I know the truth about what HSUS convinces voters is an “anti-cruelty” measure. Gestation crates are designed to PROTECT little piglets from getting accidentally crushed to death by their mothers!

The “animal rights” (AR) movement, led by HSUS, and People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are out to destroy American farmers and replace us with a vegan society. They’ve been very clear about this goal.  “Humane” Society of the United States Manager  JP Goodwin declared, “My goal is to abolish all animal agriculture.” HSUS President Wayne Pacelle has stated, “One generation and out. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals.”

Bruce Friedrich, PeTA’s director of Vegan Outreach said,  “Of course we’re going to be, as a movement, blowing things up and smashing windows … I think it’s a great way to bring about animal liberation … I think it would be great if all of the fast-food outlets, slaughterhouses, these laboratories, and the banks that fund them exploded tomorrow.”

How can farmers save themselves?  The same way we always have. The entire farming culture is built on us being there for each other. We have a long history of standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the face of adversity. It is this tradition that has always saved us. It is this instinctive sense of teamwork and unity that can save us now.

I’m asking my friends and fellow farmers to start today, with something called “Got 50?”  It’s a goal of telling 50 people the truth about the animal rights movement. The National Animal Interest Alliance has a page of quotes from AR leaders:.http://www.naiaonline.org/articles/archives/animalrightsquote.htm

Please take a few minutes, and go read these quotes. I guarantee some of them will shock you.  Please – tell your family, tell your neighbors. Use your email address book. Tell your friends at church. Knowledge is power. The AR movement has gotten this far on sheer deception. We can stop them in their tracks with the most powerful weapon of all. The truth.
